MAKING IT HAPPEN: Half a decade in, Campos-Pons and Leonard's gallery stands out as a rare "alternative space" in a Boston art scene that is dominated by commercial and institutional venues.

At the end of August, the seven-month-old Massachusetts Creative Economy Council released its first report on the state of culture here. “Is MA sexy?” one of its subcommittees asked about the Bay State. “People see us as conservative. This needs to be ‘the’ hot place to be.”

“I think that this is not a true portrait of Boston,” says renowned artist Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons. “I think that intelligence is sexy. Knowledge is sexy. Curiosity is sexy. Research is sexy. And that is Boston. I don’t find frivolity sexy. I don’t. So it depends what you look at.”

Note that, though her words fit the city’s intellectual life in general, they don’t necessarily describe the Boston art scene. “I made GASP because of that reason,” says Campos-Pons. “I wanted a little more juice.”

GASP is the Gallery Artists Studio Projects, a Boston workspace/gallery she founded with her musician husband Neil Leonard in summer 2004.

“Whatever we don’t have [in Boston] we make,” says Leonard. “And GASP is one of the ways we do that.”

After the pair moved to Brookline from Jamaica Plain in 2002, she went looking for a studio. She found a two-story building on busy, nearby Boylston Street and hatched a plan to put her workspace on the second floor and launch a gallery on the first.

“My first thought is, ‘This is absolutely crazy,’ ” recalls Leonard. “We have no time in our lives to administer a gallery, much less what I think she was really thinking about, which was an art center.”

Campos-Pons and Leonard met in 1988 when she was studying at Mass Art on an exchange program from her native Cuba and was told that the Boston musician might be able to help her create a soundtrack for a planned film. Today, they’re both busy artists whose work frequently has them on the road. Leonard just returned from performing in Italy. Campos-Pons has shown at New York’s Museum of Modern Art, Minneapolis’s Walker Art Center, the Smithsonian, and in the Venice Biennale. He teaches at Berklee College of Music. She teaches at Boston’s Museum School. They have a teenage son.

“I could see that Magda really wanted to do this,” adds Leonard, “and it was going to go forward regardless of any caution I might suggest.” So together they launched the endeavor, which gave them a forum to reach their respective artistic communities.

On October 23, this lark of a venture will celebrate its fifth anniversary with a benefit gala and “Bag It,” an auction of artist-decorated shopping bags. Half a decade in, the gallery stands out — with Axiom, Proof, and a few others — as a rare “alternative space” in a Boston art scene that is dominated by commercial galleries and institutional venues.

“It’s not really a nonprofit, but she’s not acting like [it’s] a commercial gallery, either — it’s a labor of love,” says Matt Nash, a local artist who has shown at GASP and publishes the online art journal Big Red & Shiny (bigredandshiny.com). “We need alternative spaces, because that’s where young artists get their start and where established artists can experiment.”

For Leonard, who has been performing music and organizing concerts since he was a teen, GASP’s “Sonic Arts” program gave him a regular base of operations, a place where he could pursue ideas that intrigue him — from computer-generated sound and DJs to contemporary jazz and chamber music — without worrying about whether he can find a venue. “The events I produce are events I can’t see [in Boston],” says Leonard, “unless I produce them.”

Campos-Pons oversees the gallery’s artist-organized group exhibitions. They feature local and international emerging artists, particularly people fresh out of local schools, with a dash of art stars, like Kerry James Marshall or Carrie Mae Weems, attracted by or recruited by Campos-Pons’s own stature, persuasion, and sheer will.

Artist and teacher Evelyn Rydz, who came on board as gallery manager before the space opened (she achieved the rank of gallery director before she left in 2006), recalls the night performance artist Pamela Z was scheduled to perform at GASP. It was January 2005, and a blizzard blew in. The staff suggested cancelling, but as Rydz remembers, Campos-Pons insisted on going ahead with plans. “We will do this. It will happen. We’ll make it happen.” Rydz says, “Sure enough, it was packed. Somebody came from the neighborhood on skis.” For Rydz, it epitomized Campos-Pons. “I really think Magda is about making things happen.”

“She’s sort of like a center of gravity,” says Nash. “She seems to attract people to her that give a little bit more than they would otherwise.”

Campos-Pons is currently at work proposing an international art blockbuster in Boston, an event that she hopes will make the city a can’t-miss destination on the circuit of global art biennials and fairs. Inspired by jurying the Boston Center for the Arts annual “Drawing Show” in 2008, she has been quietly forging plans for a Boston Drawing Biennale (though it could end up being a festival or, to start, simply an exhibition). She says she’s formed a small task force that has talked with some potential venues and donors. And they’ve begun circulating a draft proposal.

“I have been thinking for a long time,” says Campos-Pons, “in all my traveling, in all the cities that I have been in in the First World and in the Third World, what could be a moment of currencies, what could be the thing that joins together and then brings this city together with force in the visual arts? The idea is to bring together all these institutions, to bring together the forces that are separated between the Harvard Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, the ICA, MIT, Isabella [Stewart Gardner Museum], all the colleges, and find the way that the entire city becomes a force with some kind of umbilical cord — the umbilical cord could be drawing — and really make Boston a destination.”

At this point, the idea remains at the level of conversation. “But a serious conversation,” says Campos-Pons. “I just want to be sure that it happens. I want to keep talking. I don’t want any other road except the road that it happens.”

“Bag It” will take place at the GASP Gallery, 362–364 Boylston Street, in Brookline, on October 23 from 6–9 pm. Admission is $50, or $100 to become a “friend of GASP.” Read Greg Cook’s blog at gregcookland.com/journal.

Bios:

PIERCE WARNECKE is a musician, programmer and visual artist whose focus is split between interrelated media and electronic music and video. He works as a multimedia programmer, creating unique solutions for interactive mulitmedia installations. His work focuses on the audio-video relationship, intra/interactivity and data recycling. Past projects have dealt with video analysis software, alternate controllers, multi-point sound diffusion, machine/lighting control or modulation routing systems for artists such as Groupe Dunes (www.groupedunes.net) and XLR project (www.xlrproject.net).

Pierce releases music and video on BEE records in Lyon with duo Nth Synthesis, and alone under his own name. His audio/video/installation projects have been a part of international festivals, including Sguardi Sonori 2008 (Italy), Boston CyberArts Festival (US), American Composers Forum, Sonic Circuits (US), Optica (ES), Nuits Blanches (FR), Ososphere (FR), IMAF Osnabrueck (GER), and Mal au Pixel (FR).

AARON CHEROF performs under the name Aardvark Chekhov. He is a graduating senior from the Music Synthesis department at Berklee College of Music, and is the recipient of the 2009 Robert Moog Award. His piece “Crowd Clout” was incorporated into a dance entitled “Proxemics,” choreographed by Robin Cherof and performed by the Vassar Repertory Dance Theatre at the 27th annual Bardavon Opera House Gala. He is also organizes and maintains Tag Team Olympics, a collaborative internet music project. His senior thesis is total sound and music replacement for the video game "Braid." ANDREW JOHANSON is graduate of Berklee College of Music with a degree in music synthesis. Andrew focuses on mainly sound design for film/T.V./animation, but with his free time andrew also indulges in audio and video programming, sampling, and electronic music . His audio and video programming work mainly focuses on creating new interactive systems that are specifically designed so that anyone could use them. His most recent pieces have been incorporating audio analysis and they simply work by themselves.

Andrew also plays keyboard/organ/laptop in a electronic/funk/rock/jam band named Code: Motion. They have opened for many acts including Jason and Travis from The String Cheese Incident. They are growing larger with every performance and are up and coming on the jam rock scene.

Washington State born and raised EDWARD LOVEALL is an electronic musician, producer, software designer and web programmer. Never satisfied with the present, he is constantly exploring new techniques and processes of creating art while sticking to the simplistic nature of solid colors and pure tones. Recent projects include video performance systems, sound design plugins and electronic remixes.

Graduating from Berklee College of Music's Music Synthesis program, Edward has worked with musicians and artists from all over the world. He has worked with prominent figures in the music industry such as George Massenburg and Ron Kuivila. His work can be seen and heard on his website, http://www.edwardloveall.com

DAVID CLARK grew up playing music in the rich musical environment of Philadelphia. He studied with classical with Henry Scott of the Philadelphia Orchestra, and Jazz with Richard Davis, Rufus Reid, Michael Moore, and Eddie Gomez. He finished out the decade as the resident Jazz instructor at the International School for the Double Bass in Cincinnati during which time he was twice recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Study Grant.

NEIL LEONARD works as a sound artist, composer and saxophonist. His ensemble has featured Marshall Allen, Bruce Barth, Don Byron, Robin Eubanks, Uri Caine and Jamaaladeen Tacuma. Leonard performed and recorded with Boston Ballet, Bill Frisell, Vijay Iyer, Orlando ‘Cachaito’ Lopez, John Medeski, Butch Morris, Phill Niblock, Dave Samuels, Marvin "Smitty" Smith, Steve Swallow, Evan Ziporyn.

Leonard’s Dreaming of an Island, (for orchestra, electronics and live-video) was premiered by Kirk Trevor and the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra. Leonard's composition Totems was premiered at Carnegie Hall by Byron and Caine. His Echoes and Footsteps was featured by the Tel Aviv Biennial for New Music, Issue Project Room (NYC) and the Auditorium di Roma. Leonard's collaborative work with visual artist Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons was featured by the 49th Venice Biennial, Museum of Modern Art (NYC). Leonard composed the music for Relatives, by Tony Oursler and Constance DeJong featured by the Whitney Biennial. Leonard compositions were featured by festivals in Canada, Cuba, Dominican Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Norway, Panama, Poland, Puerto Rico, Russia, Senegal, Spain, Sweden.

Leonard is co-owner of Gallery Artist Studio Project in Boston. Leonard is a Professor at Berklee College of Music in Boston. He taught sound installation at the University of Padova and the C. Pollini Conservatory, Italy.

In 2006, Neil participated in the Berklee College of Music Faculty Exchange program and taught at the University of Padova where he worked for Prof. Sergio Durante. The faculty exchange project led to a rich exchange of ideas and several projects involving Prof. Durante and people within the GASP community. Based on this rich discourse we invited Prof. Durante to contribute to this seasons theme of examining the work of self taught artists. We are proud to present the first exhibition of his work.

A privilege of the 'self taught' is that he/she does not usually need to pursue a career in Art. To me, painting is just an amusing school of vision, a game I like to play in the not too frequent free-time; simplicity represents a goal and an alternative to the 'first life': my profession as musicologist. Simple-mindedness though is difficult to achieve at 54. That explains why - for instance - my series "Les mots et les choses", builds on very elementary watercolors a second layer of meaning, somewhat elusive, quoting Michel Foucault's best known title. Still a game though, in this case on the 'tics' of contemporary art.

Biography:

Sergio Durante (Padua, Italy, 1954) studied Music and Musicology at the University and at the Conservatory in Bologna. After a few years spent working as a practical musician, he turned his interests to Historical musicology entering the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University in 1985 and completing a Ph.D program in 1993.

His main musicological focus is methodology, investigated through studies on specific subjects ranging from Italian XVII Century to the Classical period (Mozart in particular), to Electro-acoustic music of the XXth Century. He has published essays in Italy, Germany, Austria, England, France, and Spain devoting his energies in recent years to Mozart studies in particular (member of the Mozart Academy in Salzburg since 2000).

At first associate professor at the University of Pavia, and since 2000 Full professor at the University of Padua where he chairs the Department of Music and Visual Arts. In recent years he has developed for the City of Padua an event taking place once a year, under the name Giornata dell’Ascolto (Listening day); the multi-media event approaches inductively the banalization of listening in contemporary world.
Painting (watercolor in particular) has been an interest since the 1980’s, leading to limited but constant production. His visual work does not have a significant relationship with his music studies and represents, rather, a distinct and alternative activity.

Extra information about the Artist

It is customary for Art galleries to provide a CV of the Artist. This being the first time my work is exhibited in public, I can offer no such information. I do remember however that two of my abstract watercolors are in the possession of a fellow student from the Bologna days and another one (La citta ideale) is part of a private collection in the same city.I should at least mention that a stimulus for my visual activity came from the study of XIVth century music manuscripts during my studies at Harvard. I never quite mastered the intricacies of the notational code but I was fascinated by the scribal art.

Boston Latino was front and center at Cultura Viva! Inquilinos Boricuas en Acción's (IBA) celebratory way to tell the world about their arts and culture work and to take pride by rejoicing on Latino culture, history and heritage. The renamed, Villa Victoria Center for the Arts includes the main performance space which is dedicate to Jorge Hernandez and La Galeria, that hosts visual and arts studios and program offices.

SOFFIE VIEMOSE is originally from Roskilde, Demark. She moved to Boston in 2007 to attend Berklee College of Music after receiving a scholarship. Soffie was featured on the 2008 Berklee Electronica compilation and was a finalist in the International John Lennon Songwriting contest for her single "Try". She has produced several music videos working with Danish visual artist Naja Ankarfeldt and is currently in the processing of recording her first album. Soffie's songs are supported by frosty, tranquil textures and minimalist, glitchy electronic beats, and feature her bold but delicate voice.

TIM TSANG is a Moogist, classical pianist, keyboardist, composer, and sound designer who plays and writes electronica, hip hop, and rock. Originally born in Hong Kong and raised in Vancouver, Canada, Tsang grew up mainly with classical influences, having begun piano studies at age five. After being awarded with an entrance scholarship, he went on to study Piano Performance at UBC (University of British Columbia), one of the biggest and most prestigious music programs in Canada. Having studied with renowned pianist/teacher Henri-Paul Sicsic (4th generation in lineage of Chopin), Tsang was well on his way to becoming a force in the world of Classical Music.

NEIL LEONARD works as a sound artist, composer and saxophonist. His ensemble has featured Marshall Allen, Bruce Barth, Don Byron, Robin Eubanks, Uri Caine and Jamaaladeen Tacuma. GASP SuperCollider Workshop: A friendly introduction to SuperCollider for absolute beginners, aimed at artists and musicians. Aside from a little familiarity with the digital arts, no prerequisites, though some prior exposure to computer music (perhaps through Max/MSP or Csound) may be helpful. The supported platform will be Mac OSX. The workshop will be led by Ron Kuivila.

SuperCollider is a free, cross-platform environment and programming language for real-time audio synthesis and algorithmic composition. The GASP event is a prequel to the Third International SuperCollider Symposium which will run from April 9 to 11 at Wesleyan University, Middletown Connecticut (see http://supercollider.wesleyan.edu/conf/index.php/sc3conf/SC09). The annual SuperCollider symposium features presentations by Supercollider developers and users from around the world. The opening of this year's symposium will feature a keynote address by James McCartney, the original developer of SuperCollider, and a presentation by the editorial committee of the Supercollider Book (forthcoming from MIT Press).

BIO:

Ron Kuivila is a sound artist and a teacher at Wesleyan University. He composes music and designs sound installations that revolve around the unusual homemade and home modified electronic instruments he designs. He pioneered the use of ultrasound (In Appreciation) and sound sampling (Alphabet) in live performance. More recent pieces have explored compositional algorithms (Loose Canons), speech synthesis (The Linear Predictive Zoo) and high voltage phenomena (Pythagorean Puppet Theatre). Kuivila has performed and exhibited installations throughout the U.S., Canada, and Europe. He has collaborated with other composers, artists, and choreographers including Anthony Braxton, Rudy Burckhardt, Nicolas Collins, Merce Cunningham, Hugh Davies, Douglas Dunn, Susan Foster, and Larry Johnson.

Dan St. Clair makes works that playfully reconsider our daily listening habits. His public projects include Call Notes, where artificial birds sing pop tunes in public parks, a muzak map of the Chicago Loop, a unique set of bicycle horns, and The Cure for That Song Stuck in Your Head. In performance and gallery pieces he has amplified sheets of melting ice and played an instrument made from a book and sewing thread. In 2004 he archived a set of original piano preparations used by John Cage and David Tudor. Exhibition venues include SFX Seoul, South Korea, Soho In Ottakring, Vienna, Austria, Sonambiente 2006, Berlin, Germany, The Chocolate Factory, New York, NY, Wired Magazine NEXTfest, Chicago, IL, and Mess Hall, Chicago, IL. As a pianist, he has performed with Anthony Braxton, Matt Bauder, Mary Halvorson, and Jamey Abersold. He has studied with Nic Collins, Mary Jane Jacob, Ron Kuivila, Laurie Palmer, and Anne Wilson. BIO:

ERDEM HELVACIOGLU is a renowned young Turkish composer/performer. He received commissions from the 2006 World Soccer Championship, 2009 Novelum Festival, 2010 Istanbul International Classical Music Festival, 2010 Bregenz Contemporary Music Festival, Bang on a Can All-Stars, Todd Reynolds, Kinan Azmeh, Margaret Lancaster, Cem Duruöz and Mesut Ozgen. His sound installations have been featured by Track 16 (Los Angeles ), Soemardja ( Indonesia), Köln Museum für Angewandte Kunst, Menier (London) and the 10th International Istanbul Biennial. His film music has been featured by film festivals in Cannes, Sarajevo, Locarno, Seoul, Sao Paulo, and Sydney. He received the “Best Original Soundtrack” award in the 2006 Mostramundo Film Festival. His solo album “Altered Realities” has been included in the “Best 20 albums of 2007” list in All About Jazz, Textura and Cyclic Defrost magazines.

TIM TSANG is a Moogist, classical pianist, keyboardist, composer, and sound designer who plays and writes electronica, hip hop, and rock. Originally born in Hong Kong and raised in Vancouver, Canada, Tsang grew up mainly with classical influences, having begun piano studies at age five. After being awarded with an entrance scholarship, he went on to study Piano Performance at UBC (University of British Columbia), one of the biggest and most prestigious music programs in Canada. Having studied with renowned pianist/teacher Henri-Paul Sicsic (4th generation in lineage of Chopin), Tsang was well on his way to becoming a force in the world of Classical Music.

Tsang was offered a major scholarship from Berklee College of Music. Originally majoring in Jazz Performance, Tim switched his focus on Music Synthesis, absorbing himself with knowledge and interest in modern music technology and sound design. In December 2007, after only three months of exposure to electronic music, Tsang went back to Canada and performed a full length set with pumping beats and fresh sounds at the Plaza Club in front of several hundred people. He also performed as the lead singer/rapper with the Sweetness Group which included the Ray Garraway, drummer of Grammy Nominated Artist "K-OS".

NEIL LEONARD works as a sound artist, composer and saxophonist. His ensemble has featured Marshall Allen, Bruce Barth, Don Byron, Robin Eubanks, Uri Caine and Jamaaladeen Tacuma. Leonard performed and recorded with Boston Ballet, Bill Frisell, Vijay Iyer, Orlando ‘Cachaito’ Lopez, John Medeski, Butch Morris, Phill Niblock, Dave Samuels, Marvin "Smitty" Smith, Steve Swallow, Evan Ziporyn.

Leonard’s Dreaming of an Island, (for orchestra, electronics and live-video) was premiered by Kirk Trevor and the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra. Leonard's composition Totems was premiered at Carnegie Hall by Byron and Caine. His Echoes and Footsteps was featured by the Tel Aviv Biennial for New Music, Issue Project Room (NYC) and the Auditorium di Roma. Leonard's collaborative work with visual artist Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons was featured by the 49th Venice Biennial, Museum of Modern Art (NYC). Leonard composed the music for Relatives, by Tony Oursler and Constance DeJong featured by the Whitney Biennial. Leonard compositions were featured by festivals in Canada, Cuba, Dominican Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Norway, Panama, Poland, Puerto Rico, Russia, Senegal, Spain, Sweden. Leonard is co-owner of Gallery Artist Studio Project in Boston. Leonard is a Professor at Berklee College of Music in Boston. He taught sound installation at the University of Padova and the C. Pollini Conservatory, Italy.

Stina Edblom is a Research Curator for the 3rd Guangzhou Triennial, hosted by the Guangdong Museum of Art in China. In 2007 Stina completed a Masters degree in Contemporary Art Theory from Goldsmiths College. Previous to this she worked and studied History of Art and Museology in Sweden as well as in Cape Town, South Africa, where she completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Museum and Heritage Studies in 2001. After furthering her research in South Africa and completed an internship at the curatorial department at the South African National Gallery, Stina curated the exhibition Voicing the Abstract with South African artists Ernestine White, Thembeka Quangule and Trish Lovemore. In 2005/6 Stina initiated and worked as project manager for the Swedish/South African cultural partnership Gender Equity in the Visual Arts: Women in Dialogue. The project was a collaboration between Arts and Media Access Center (AMAC) in Cape Town and Wiks People's College in Uppsala, Sweden. Stina currently lives and works in Stockholm, Sweden.

PARAL-LEL is a duo composed of two artists, Slush and Praktisch, also both founders of BEE Records. Slush built his own sound by becoming an expert DJ in electro breakbeat and breakcore, while Praktisch got into more subtle sounds like post rock and click n' cuts atmospheres. On stage, Paral.lel gathers these influences into a dynamic and lively electro which is based on organic melodies that leave enough room for powerfull breaks.

NTH SYNTHESIS: American born Pierce Warnecke and Frenchman Romain Serrate are the two humans that comprise this Nth Synthesis. Two geeks from different backgrounds, both captivated by technology and intelligent machines. After releasing an EP on the Canadian label Nishi, they return in May 2008 with a dual 5 song/3 video CD on BEE Records. Throughout their work they draw a universe of catchy melodies, chopped beats and distorted fractals. An alchemy right on the border of chaos, like the thermodynamic triple point between three phases: sound, emotion and images. Influences as diverse as Brian Eno, Plaid, Klaus Schulze Philip K Dick or Maurice G Dantec fill their simple 'human' minds.

ANTHONY BALDINO composes electronic music for modern dance and concert performance. For the past two summers he toured Europe playing in the Sguardi Sonori (Venice), Pop-Eye and Futurity Festivals (La Spezia/Benevento) and the Folkwang Hochschule (Essen). GADI SASSOON has been described as a "laptop maestro" (Animate!, The Hayward Gallery), a "young cult Italian act" and "one of today's most interesting breakthrough artists" (Soundcrash). He is best known for a live mash-up of genres and sonic sculpting that has shaken floors in London, Paris, Milan, Berlin, Shanghai, Boston, Barcelona, Glasgow, and NYC. He has been featured on bills with Luke Vibert, Coldcut, Clark, Battles, The Herbalizer, Zerodb, DJ Vadim, Daedelus, Kode9, N-type, and Loefah. KATIE AMARAL (MetalKT) is a guitar player and electronic artist from Somerville, MA. She composes and produces all of her own music and is currently working on a software instrument library derived from all original samples. She currently works as a music software tutor and is interning as a sound designer at Sonivox inc. ERIC MILLER is a sound artist based in southern New Hampshire. He uses the term 'grayscale' to refer to gradations between binary opposites which are often present in his work. These include rigid/free, improvisation/composition or algorithm, real-time/offline, and tonal/atonal. Miller attempts in his work to traverse these gradations; sometimes with gentle shifts, sometimes with violent leaps from one extreme to the other. The intended result is ambiguity; an obscuring of process, and confusion of which regime a passage lies within each of these axes. Miller's pieces often fit into a category of meta- or counter-composition. This is when several smaller works are brought together in an incommensurate way. They exist within the same framework, yet cannot be considered a unity.

The Greater Boston art gallery scene has a bit of a stagnant reputation, due in part to stuffy Newbury Street spots haunted by old, wealthy art patrons sipping little plastic cups of chardonnay. But there are pockets of life out there for a younger, more restless crowd.

Along with showing paintings, photography, sculpture, and sound art, Brookline's Gasp Gallery books touring musicians and talented Berklee kids for live music - from head-bobbing dance tracks to electroacoustic soundscapes - that draws a sizable crowd. Not only that, Gasp is only one block from the "D" train's Brookline Hills stop on the Green Line.

Tonight, Bruxism, a duo that makes use of experimental voice-work, woodwinds, and various electronics, plays alongside far-out free jazz duo Allan Chase and Bruno Raberg. All ages. Doors at 8 p.m. $10 suggested donation, $6 for students. 362-4 Boylston St., Brookline. 617-418-4308.

The CALLITHUMPIAN CONSORT is dedicated to the proposition that music is an experience. Founded by pianist and conductor Stephen Drury in the late 1990's, we are an ensemble producing concerts of contemporary music at the highest standard. The Consort consists of a senior band of long standing Thump soloists, but is fundamentally flexible in size and makeup, enabling the group to tackle unusual repertoire in non-standard or larger chamber ensembles, or to take part in experimental projects. Our repertoire encompasses a huge stylistic spectrum, from the classics of the last 50 years to works of the avant-garde and experimental jazz and rock. Active commissioning and recording of new works is crucial to our mission. We have worked with composers John Cage, Lee Hyla, John Zorn, Michael Finnissy, Franco Donatoni, Lukas Foss, Steve Reich, Helmut Lachenmann, John Luther Adams, Frederic Rzewski, Christian Wolff and many others. Recordings are available on Tzadik, New World and Mode records.

JESSICA FELDMAN is an intermedia artist with a background in sound, sculpture and installation. She creates work that asks its audience to engage in dynamic relationships with their physical surroundings, with each other, with larger communities and with political questions. Recent pieces tend toward interactivity and often occur in extremely public or extremely private spaces. She makes use of sculptural materials, video and choreographic practices in addition to sound. Works have been performed, installed and exhibited internationally at art galleries, museums, concert halls, public parks, city streets, tiny closets and the internet and at NYC venues such as The Kitchen, Roulette, The Stone, The Tank, MonkeyTown and Tenri Cultural Institute. Her work has received grants/awards from the LMCC, the Max Kade Foundation, Columbia University, Meet the Composer and the Experimental Television Center, among others.

ANNE RHODES is a vocalist based in New Haven, CT. She holds a B.M. in Voice Performance from Boston University, and an M.A. in Experimental Music Performance from Wesleyan University. Anne specializes in collaborating with composers and improvisation, using extended vocal techniques while relying heavily on her classical training. She has performed with Portland Opera Repertory Theatre, the Crane School of Music Opera Ensemble, the Boston University Chamber Choir, the New England Conservatory Continuing Education Opera Studio, MIT Gilbert and Sullivan Players, the Anthony Braxton Large Ensemble, the FLUX Quartet, Mirror Boiyz, and Connecticut Opera, and has premiered works by composers including Anthony Braxton, Neil Leonard, Taylor Ho Bynum, and Alvin Lucier.Rhodes is a member of the New Haven Improvisors Collective.

CARL TESTA is a composer and instrumentalist based in New Haven, CT and New York City. Originally from Chicago, Testa studied music with Donn DeSanto, at the U of C Lab School, as well as at the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) School of Music. He studied music and sociology at Wesleyan University with Anthony Braxton, Neely Bruce, Alvin Lucier, Ron Kuivila, Charles Lemert, and performed with Anthony Braxton, Aaron Siegel, Anne Rhodes, Angela Opell, Andrew Raffo Dewar, Gergely Kiss, Dave Ruder, Daniel Raimi, Dave Kadden, Philip Schulze, David Jensenius, and many others. Presently, he leads his own groups, and is a key member of Anthony Braxton's ensemble. Testa's compositional interests are focused on in writing for clarinet ensembles, for electronics, for voice, and for multimedia events.

Bassist/composer BRUNO RÅBERG is originally from Sweden. At age 20 he moved to Stockholm to join Eje Thelin's band and stayed on for four years, recording and touring extensively. In 1981 Råberg relocated to the US to study with Miroslav Vitous at New Enland Conservatory. Råberg has performed throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, as well as North, South and Central America. He released 5 CDs as a leader and has performed with: Mick Goodrick, Matt Wilson, Bob Moses, Jerry Bergonzi, George Garzone, Yoron Israel, Billy Hart, Dick Oats, Stockholm Jazz Orchestra, Bobo Stensson, Thomas Gustavsson, Sam Rivers, Julius Hemphil, Jim Black, Bruce Barth, Bob Mintzer, Greg Osby, Jackie Byard, Ran Blake, George Russell, Miroslav Vitous, Regina Carter, Antonio Hart, Billy Kilson, Gene Jackson, John Medeski, John LaPorta, John McNeil, Rachel Z, Donald Brown, Bill Pierce, Smithsonian Jazz Orchestra with David Baker. Råberg is a Professor at Berklee College of Music.

Jazz and classical saxophonist ALLAN CHASE has performed with Alan Dawson, Teddy Kotick, Mick Goodrick, Lewis Nash, Fred Hersch, and Andrew Cyrille. Chase's debut recording with his own quartet, Dark Clouds with Silver Linings, was chosen as one of the top ten jazz CDs of 1995 by critics for the Boston Globe, Jazziz, and the Boston Phoenix. His second CD, Phoenix, was released in 2000. From 1981 to 1995, he was a member of Your Neighborhood Saxophone Quartet, which recorded six CDs and performed on 10 European concert tours. Since 1992, Chase has been a member of Rashied Ali's quintet, Prima Materia, and has recorded four CDs with him. He has also performed chamber music with Marimolin and the Princeton Composers' Ensemble. Chase has recorded with his own quartet and with Gunther Schuller, John Zorn, Dominique Eade, and Stanley Cowell, and has done studio recordings for feature films, popular music records, television, radio, and advertisements. Recordings on Coppens, Knitting Factory Works, Catalyst/BMG, Accurate, GM, Bridge, Cadence Jazz, YOUR Records, Northeastern.

NEIL LEONARD works as a sound artist, composer and saxophonist. His ensemble has featured Marshall Allen (Director of the Sun Ra Arkestra), Bruce Barth, Uri Caine, Don Byron, Kenwood Dennard, Robin Eubanks, Frank Lacy, Oriente Lopez, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, and Uri Caine. Leonard's Dreaming of an Island, for orchestra, electronics and video was premiered by the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra. Leonard's composition Totems was premiered at Carnegie Recital Hall by Byron and Caine. Leonard compositions were featured in festivals in Europe, North America, Africa, Middle East, Japan and the Caribbean. Leonard's collaborative work with visual artist Magdalena Campos-Pons was featured by the 49th Venice Biennial and MOMA, NY. Leonard has recorded for ECM, A&M, Accurate and Interval Recordings. Leonard is co-owner of Gallery Artist Studio Project (GASP). Leonard is a Professor at Berklee College of Music, and taught sound installation at the University of Padova and the C. Pollini Conservatory, Italy.

Named a Rising Star on the alto saxophone in 2006 and 2007 by the Downbeat Magazine International Critics Poll, STEVE LEHMAN is a saxophonist and composer whose work resides on the cutting-edge of contemporary music. He has been recognized as one of today's truly original creative voices by The Wire, The New York Times, The Village Voice, and by National Public Radio. A former student of both Jackie McLean and Anthony Braxton, he has performed and recorded throughout the United States and Europe with his own ensembles, and with those led by Anthony Braxton, Dave Burrell, Mark Dresser, Vijay Iyer, Oliver Lake, and Meshell Ndegeocello. Lehman's pieces for large orchestra and chamber ensembles have been performed by the Janacek Philharmonic, members of Ensemble 21 and Ensemble Sospeso, and by the pianist Marilyn Nonken. Lehman's recent electro-acoustic music has focused on the development of computer-driven models for improvisation using Max/MSP. Lehman is a doctoral candidate in Music Composition at Columbia University. Lehman's recordings as a leader include On Meaning (Pi 2007) and Demian as Posthuman (Pi 2005), featuring 9-time Grammy nominee Meshell Ndegeocello.
